Elly Miller, Technical Consultant at ICS, shares how a chance opportunity led to a fulfilling career in insurance compliance, her passion for making regulation manageable, and the adventurous side that’s taken her from the boardroom to the African bush.

When did you start working for ICS and what was your original role?
I joined ICS in October 2023 as a Technical Consultant.
How has your career progressed since then?
My time at ICS has been all about consolidating my regulatory knowledge, strengthening relationships with existing clients, and expanding my network wherever possible.
What are your key focuses in your current role?
I help clients develop clear, actionable compliance plans and ensure they stay ahead of regulatory changes. My goal is always to take a proactive, rather than reactive, approach.
What are your areas of specialism?
Consumer Duty, Appointed Representative Monitoring and Product Governance are my main focus areas.
What do you love most about your job?
The variety! No two days are the same, and I love the challenge of new questions and the constant learning. Building client relationships and watching their confidence in compliance grow is hugely rewarding.
What were you doing before ICS?
I’ve spent about 12 years in compliance, starting in pensions before moving into insurance within an Appointed Representative network. Just before ICS, I was managing compliance for a major UK broker.
What’s the most unusual job you’ve had?
Straight out of school, I ran a creperie in a restaurant!
Did you go to university?
No - I chose to go straight into work and avoid student debt. It’s a decision I’ve never regretted.
How did you get into insurance compliance?
Pure chance! My boss needed help with a compliance project, and I volunteered. A year later, I was a full-time Compliance Manager. I was lucky that the firm supported me to complete my ICA Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance.
What are your top priorities for your clients?
Delivering compliance that’s simple, manageable, and cost-effective.
What’s the biggest challenge facing your clients right now?
The sheer volume of regulatory requirements and reporting. For small businesses, it’s overwhelming - and it’s only becoming more complex.
What do you do to unwind?
I own two horses and am currently training one of them. I also have a black belt in Taekwondo and train several times a week. When I’m not doing that, I’m a bit of a geek - I love fantasy and sci-fi books.
Any unexpected facts about you?
In 2017, I rode on horseback across Kruger National Park in South Africa. It was an unforgettable experience - I came face to face with lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and more. Truly incredible (and sometimes terrifying)!
