Q & A
When did you join ICS and in what role?
I joined ICS as an Associate back in January 2020. While my title hasn't changed since then, the experience I’ve gained has been invaluable and my role has grown significantly in both depth and breadth.
How has your career developed since joining ICS?
Though not reflected in job titles, my career has evolved through hands-on experience and client-facing responsibilities. Each project has sharpened my knowledge and allowed me to become a trusted advisor to a wide range of firms.
What are your key areas of focus right now?
I spend much of my time helping firms navigate the evolving landscape of Consumer Duty, always in a way that’s proportionate to their size and needs. Every firm is different, and my support is always tailored to reflect that. I also keep a close eye on sector-specific hot topics to ensure our advice stays relevant and actionable.
What do you love most about your job?
No two days are ever the same and that’s what keeps it exciting. I love getting to know the people behind the businesses, both clients and vendors. There’s such a variety of personalities in this industry, and that makes the job even more rewarding.
What were you doing before ICS?
Believe it or not, my first job was as a travel agent but the pay didn’t quite match the dream. I moved into financial services, earned my mortgage qualifications, and gradually found my way into compliance. I’ve been working in insurance compliance for over 15 years now, and I still love what I do. Travel is still a big passion, thankfully, I get to indulge in it whenever I can.
Most unusual or worst job you’ve had?
I haven’t had any especially unusual roles, but the worst was definitely food prep in a local pub - peeling prawns and grating cheese. I absolutely hated every second!
Did you go to university?
No, my career path has been built through experience and professional development rather than academia. How did you find your way into insurance compliance? I was working in mortgage compliance when the credit crunch hit, which had a huge impact on the company I was with. After a stint of temp work, I found myself drawn back into compliance, this time in insurance, working as a compliance manager at a small brokerage. It turned out to be the start of a long and fulfilling journey.
What are your priorities for clients?
I aim to make regulation feel less like a burden and more like a practical, purposeful process. There’s a huge weight of responsibility on brokers, especially in smaller firms, so I work hard to bring clarity, focus, and reassurance.
What key challenges are your clients facing right now?
Time! Many smaller firms are stretched thin and struggling to show how they’re truly looking after their customers. My role is to help them bridge that gap in a meaningful way.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Food is a big part of my life; learning about it, cooking it, and of course, eating it. I’m currently nurturing a sourdough starter affectionately named Zoe (because it rhymes with doughy). We’re experimenting with bread and pizza bases, much to my family’s delight. I’m married with two young kids, and we love getting out and about together. Staying active and healthy is a big priority too.
Any fun facts or unusual experiences?
One Christmas, I flew all the way to Melbourne for a holiday… only for my gallbladder to rupture. Cue an ambulance ride, emergency surgery, and a recovery period that saw me miss most of the sights. The silver lining? I was upgraded to Business Class for the journey home - proof that travel insurance really does come in handy!
